Great Things about Windows 7

One of the great things about the newly released Windows 7 operating system is that it does away with the need to install 3rd party software to perform certain tasks. For example, in the past if you wanted to burn data onto a CD or DVD, you had to download and install a 3rd party software application – not with Windows 7. You can burn CDs and DVDs from within Windows 7.

The same goes for managing your partitions. In the past, when you wanted to increase the size of a partition you had to download and install a capable 3rd party software application (the name Partition Magic comes to mind). With Windows 7 you can perform this task from within the operating system, no 3rd party application required.

Here is what you have to do to increase the size of a partition in Windows:

Step 1. Start (click the Start icon from the bottom left hand corner of the screen or press the Windows key on your keyboard) -> click Control Panel -> click System and Security.

Step 2. Click Administrative Tools -> select Computer Management.

Step 3. To extend the size of a partition you must dig into the space of another partition. In this regard you must right click this other partition -> select Delete Volume. Deleting the secondary partition will allow you to increase the size of the primary partition.

Step 4. Confirm your action by pressing Yes when presented with this question: Deleting this volume will erase all data on it. Back up any data you want to keep before deleting. Do you want to continue?
Do as the prompt says: backup any data that you do not want to lose.

Step 5. Right click the drive/partition you want to extend and select Extend Volume.

Step 6. Follow the steps presented in the Extend Volume Wizard. It’s only a matter of reading the info provided for every step and clicking the appropriate button.

Tips and warnings
• When extending a drive/partition you can eat up another partition completely. Alternatively you could just take eat up a bit of space.
